Seamount - III Sacrifice (2010)

The latest from Seamount (one of the finest doom metal bands at the moment). Singer Phil Swanson has a great resume for singing in some awesome metals bands such as Hour Of 13 and Vestal Claret as well as Seamount, of course. If you're a fan, you won't be disappointed with their latest. If you haven't heard these guys before, this album also makes a great place to start.

Acid Witch - Midnight Mass E.P. (2010)

The Midnght Mass E.P. was released as a teaser before Acid Witch released their new album, Stoned. You know what to expect: classic horror movie samples with haunting and comical organ-led horror music mixed in with traditional stoner-doom/death metal. Good stuff.

Hollow Leg - Instinct (2010)

Thanks to Jarad Weston, of Orlandooom Promotions, for letting me know about this great sludge/doom metal band out of Jacksonville, Florida and their great album Instinct!

Great groovin' sludgy doom that's thick and dirty! You can't go wrong with this one.

You can listen, download for free, or buy the album here

Staccionata - ECCE! (2010)‏

This nice album was sent to me by Jacopo Condò, one of the singers for the band Staccionata (from Roma, Italy)!

This is how he described their sound: "We play an experimental psychedelic stoner-doom/hardcore, with some krautrock and some post-something....?"

Raw and in-your-face Italian hardcore vocals with some of the trippiest, and maybe even somewhat deranged, psychedelic moments and effects I've ever heard. This one's all over the place as far genre tagging is concerned.

So, if you're looking for something different and original sounding, then look no further. These guys always surprise on their debut full-length ECCE! This band has a lot of potential and look forward to hearing future experimentations.

Original, experimental, raw, in your face, and psychedelic.

Tombstones - Vol II (2010)

Hailing from Oslo, Norway, the Tombstones, released their second full length (aptly titled Volume II) earlier this year.

"Volume II" is a 9-song-long manifestation of how heavy rock should sound like in 2010. The album is recorded live and analog, and will kick-start rock-hearts with a weakness for warm and tube-driven distortion. The sound of Tombstones is crushingly massive, suggestive and down-tuned, and has references to the best milestones of heavy-rock through time. The collaboration of Billy Anderson and Audun Strype from the prior album continues and they purify the sound Tombstones has developed as their trademark on "Volume II". Through riffs, sounds, lyrics and mood the fog comes oozing from the dark woods of Norway."~ from their myspace

You'll be hooked right after hearing the first riff from opening track "Hellfire", guaranteed!

Keef - Stoned To Doom (2010)

Yet another great Canadian gem! Keef are a stoner/doom metal band from Toronto, Ontario. They combine awesome doom riffing a la Sabbath and St. Vitus with melodic vocals and psychedelic textures. This is their debut full length, Stoned To Doom on the great psycheDOOMelic records. A great newcomer to the stoner/doom metal scene!

Romero - Solitaire 7" single (2010)

A new stoner metal heavyweight has just entered the ring!

This request comes from the mighty Romero out of Winsconsin. The following caption comes directly from the e-mail Romero sent me.

"Romero's Jeffrey Mundt spent most of the 90's behind the drum kit for a variety of bands including Bovine Records' THUG & punk legends, NAKED AGGRESSION. A long-time guitar player & songwriter, he often dabbled in fronting a band, but never pursued it seriously. Enter: a move to northern WI, a random Craigslist ad from bass player Josh Stanchik, a casual 8 month writing and recording session (with Mundt handling vocals, guitar & drums!) & Romero was born! Intent on creating a demo to locate & convince a drummer to work with them, Mundt & Stanchik were about a month from completion when... a drummer found them! Rumors of the project peaked the interest of PONEY drummer & vocalist Ben Brooks and he gleefully volunteered before even hearing a single note. Good thing he eventually liked what he heard!
ROMERO started playing live immediately. Very often. First, locally...then regionally...now, nation-wide!

ROMERO spreads like a weed.

HEAVY - LOUD - VERY, VERY HIGH..."

Jeffrey Mundt - vocals & guitars
Joshua Stanchik - bass
Ben Brooks - drums & vocals

Acid Witch - Stoned (2010)

The death/doom outfit from Michigan known as Acid Witch return with Stoned. If you heard any of their previous releases (E.P.s and Witchtanic Hallucinations L.P.), you'll have noticed that the band's sound hasn't really changed all that much. But then again, it is only their second album and they do have a fairly original sound. Well, it's more the combination of influences and their sense of humour that make it unique sounding. So, if you are a big fan of their previous releases you won't be disappointed but don't expect much of an evolution. Also another good introduction for those who are fans of doom and stoner metal but not the death-doom hybrid.

Shagrat & Dave share duties.

Druid Lord - Hymns For The Wicked (2010)

My new favourite death/doom metal band! Druid lord are a death/doom metal band from Orlando, Florida and this is their debut album Hymns For The Wicked. Druid Lord draw many influences from the old school doom and death metal scenes. Doom metal with death metal vocals you can actually understand. If you've never been a big fan of the death/doom crossover genre, Druid Lord just may be the band to change all that for you. Highly recommended.

Confessor - Unraveled (2005)

This technical doom metal band from Raleigh, North Carolina have been around since 1986 but have only managed to record two full length albums so far. This is their second, Unraveled, from 2005.

"Many moons ago, CONFESSOR dropped a bomb called "Condemned." Not only was this album firmly within the bounds of Doom Metal, but it managed to kick those bounds around a bit and land itself into realm of Progressive Metal. Doom and Progressive might seem like mutually exclusive terms, but CONFESSOR made it work and made it work in such a way that Doomsters and Progsters could both agree - this was good stuff. Though the high-pitched vocals might have been a bit off-putting, the sheer power and complexity of the music was more than enough to compensate.

Fast forward to today and we find a reunited CONFESSOR finally releasing their second full-length, "Unraveled." The band never planned on reforming, but following a few tribute shows put on to help cover the medical bills of their late guitarist, Ivan Colon, the band realized that they still had it. They could still rip through the old material and they could still write songs that rivalled anything they had done in the past. "Unraveled" is proof enough of this last statement - CONFESSOR are back, still relevant and as powerful as ever. They're Doom, they're Progressive and they're Metal, but most of all, they're awesome." ~ The Metal Observer review.

Minsk - With Echoes In The Movement Of Stone (2009)

For those unaware of Minsk, they are a progressive sludge doom metal band from Chicago, Illinois. Kind of sound like a mix of Mastodon and Neurosis.

"Shimmer, and shine. Lengthen, and volumize. Target, and utterly destroy: these are the blueprints for the basic Neur-Isis sound that has birthed dozens of ebb and flow enthusiasts of various musical persuasions. Chicago/Peoria, Illinois area doomsters Minsk is among the heaviest of these bands, as well as one of the more eclectic in sonic personality, but this new landscape has taken a turn for something that may require a bit more listening in order to fully grasp this time around on With Echoes In The Movement Of Stone. Not so much in aesthetic, nor progression, but in structure, and when it suddenly dawns upon you what the change is that Minsk has undertaken, the subtle shift becomes very clear.

They've written an entire album full of great songs, and not just an hour of great music." ~ Metal Review.

Ramesses - Take The Curse (2010)

This is the latest from Dorset, U.K.'s Ramesses. Sludgy death doom with elements of black metal is what's served up here. Gruff and raspy vocals with slow and deafening riffage accompanied by thunderous and plodding drums. Eerily mesmerizing.

Mountain Of Judgement - Mountain Of Judgement (2009)

"A killer album out of 65 minutes of Psychedelic Stoner Doom that has so far flown under the radar for most people, pity because its a great blend of crushing Doom Metal and space/psych sounds. Formed back in 2003 the original line-up of Mountain of Judgement Scott Cline (bass), Dave Easter (drums), Scott Isenhour (synthesizers) and Chad Davis (vocals, guitar, synthesizer) started recording this album in 2005 but was only completed by Davis 2009. The other members have left the band and Davis re-recorded the drums himself and arranged the songs by himself." ~ excerpt from an interview with Mountain Of Judgement for Doomantia by Aleks Evdokimo.

Radio Garage - Radio Garage (2010)

Thanks to Radio Garage for sharing this awesome album with me! Unfortunately the band didn't send me much information about the band or their release. That and my complete lack of ability to understand any language other than English, doesn't help much either. So here is Insane-Riez's short review of the album including a translated Biography from their myspace page.

"Radio Garage is a band from Lima, Peru. This band plays a combination of Rock 'n' Roll, Punk, Metal and Hard Rock. Their full-length debut album kicks ass! Radio Garage offers you eight great songs that will make your body move or at least it lets your head bang! You can also download their EP from 2005 on their Blogspot. Enjoy!" ~ Stoner Rock Is Here To Stay (Great Blog you should check out, if you haven't already).

"5 years after forming, and after lineup changes Garage Radio released their debut, new and old tracks reworked with a new sound and attitude as always, rock n 'roll to pure machine in 8 songs where Fernando Acosta (Under ) Kaminoisee (guitar), Oscar Soto (drums) and Ricardo Barandiaran (guitar, vocals) shed more visceral influences, from rock n 'roll dirty "Sinner" to obscure passages of the metal in "Servant." Garage Radio was formed in 2005 by Acosta and Barandiaran, who after going through various experiences in hardcore and punk bands, they decided to combine forces with old friends, Alfonso Chacon on drums (Kronocidio, Berserker, Ching Dynasty) and Coco Maple guitar (Kronocidio, Concrete) and began playing in local band circuit, they release a 4 song EP via Deskicia discs that get good reviews, then after exhausting tour concerts bars and holes appear in the compilation of web rockperu . org with two new songs after this, and many events, the band goes into a brief recess, which Alfonso and Coco out of the band to make way for the next stage with Kaminoisee (Macondo, God boredom, The Air ) and Oscar (Helldrunk) where the road takes you started recording the eponymous album on par with a string of gigs where the band earned the respect of the public and other bands, while the disc even finished editing, a new issue arises subsequent sessions to the compilation of Berraco Records label, the song "xdrmmr / a being without a name" is part of the horizon where he leads the group not to forget the raw and wild rock that is his trademark."

OBIAT - Emotionally Driven Disturbulence (2005)

Thanks to Insane_Riez (from the "Stoner Rock Is Here To Stay" blog) for this great doom gem!

"OBIAT is a (UK) London-Reading based multinational 4 piece (Polish,Hungarian,Italian,English), playing mesmerizing, hypnotic metal, with characteristic soulful vocals. Psychodelic almost trance-like atmosphere mixed with heavy riffs. Ocassionally live OBIAT performances are filled with the sound of hurdy-gurdy and tribal percussion, and sometimes with a moog and hammond organ for lowering the wall of sound." ~ last.fm.

Slough Feg - The Animal Spirits (2010)

Slough Feg (formerly known as The Lord Weird Slough Feg) return with probably their best album to date, The Animal Spirits.

"When stacking this up next to the band’s prior releases (which includes the time when they were “The Lord Weird Slough Feg”), The Animal Spirits ends up somewhere in the Top 3. It certainly catapults over last year’s Ape Uprising, and could easily hold its own against the aforementioned Atavism and Traveller, an album that has long been considered the band’s signature work. Don’t ever sleep on these guys – Slough Feg should be an institution." ~ Blistering review.

The Heavy Eyes - Rough Demo 2010

Thanks to Eric (their drummer) for sending me this request!

The Heavy Eyes are a great southern blues rock band from Tennessee and  Mississippi who slash out thick heavy riffs and licks with ease and skill. They're  heading into the studio later this year to record their debut full-length but in the meantime we are treated to a rough demo they recorded. While this demo may not have been recorded professionally in a studio, you can easily tell that this band has great chemistry and sounds really tight and well developed already. And although they emphasize how rough this demo is, I've heard worse quality recordings. I was so impressed by their demo that I can't wait for their debut album already!

If you're a fan of southern riff-heavy blues rockers like the Suede Brothers, than you'll love these guys.

Check 'em out at their Bandcamp page to listen to songs and download their demo for free! I bet you'll be impressed and anticipating an future releases like me.

The Fucking Wrath - Terra Fire E.P. (2010)

Wasn't overly impressed with their debut album Season of Evil but the band seems to have honed in on their sound and tightened things up. Spewing forth their Black Flag inspired punk/doom/thrash for the great Terra Fire E.P.

"Three years after releasing their debut album Season Of Evil thrashing stoner outfit The Fucking Wrath have surfaced once again with a brand new EP entitled Terra Fire – which is their first release for their new label Tee Pee Records, and a taste of what to expect from the band’s upcoming sophomore effort due sometime early in 2011.

Comprising of four new tracks and a cover, Terra Fire maybe a little on the short side in terms of fan’s expectations after three years away from the studio. But in terms of the quality heard on the five tracks, The Fucking Wrath well and truly deliver on all fronts. " ~ Blistering review.

GWAR - Bloody Pit Of Horror (2010)

GWAR are much more of punkish-thrash metal band than a stoner metal band, I know; but this is a great album. Here's what a Kik Axe Music reviewer had to say about the band and their latest effort:

"Love 'em or hate 'em, GWAR are never going away. For over 25 years the band from Antarctica via Virginia have been bringing their campy brand of horror-infused metal to the masses, and one thing that's always bothered me about those quick to write them off for their "act" is that they fail to note that GWAR is comprised of some genuinely great musicians. While the band hit somewhat of a stale period in the late '90's and into the early 2000's, starting with 2004's BEYOND HELL, GWAR has actually been getting better." ~ Kik Axe Music review.

Electric Magma - Snail The Wah (2005)

"Electric Magma formed in 2000 in the melting pot known as Toronto, Canada. Emerging from the ashes of previous musical endeavors, the thunderous trio comprised of Tryg Smith , Tim Reesor and Tom Brouard forged ahead with their vision of sonic eruption. Halfway up the fuzzed-out sludge ladder, somewhere in between the metal boogie rock of Clutch and the surfed-up stoner rock of Fu Manchu, lies the sound of burning liquid rock. Electrified Magma." ~Last.Fm

Cough - Ritual Abuse (2010)

\m/  This album slays!   \m/

"Richmond’s COUGH delivers thoroughly massive, psychedelic doom on their aptly titled Relapse debut ‘Ritual Abuse’. The albums five epic tracks are impenetrable walls of sludge; at points suffocating and claustrophobic, at others warped and hallucinogenic. ‘Ritual Abuse’ is an impressive monolith of sound and volume, and one of the finest moments yet of 21st century doom." - Their myspace page.

Electric Wizard - Black Masses (2010)

Dorset, England's Electric Wizard finally return with probably their most anticipated, and arguably their best, album to date, Black Masses.

"Electric Wizard are back! Their seventh full-length album for Rise Above Records and this doesn't disappoint at all. It is no surprise that Electric Wizard are legends within the Doom Metal scene as their albums are among the heaviest ever recorded, some say the HEAVIEST. Whenever you get a band like this, recording some of the most classic Doom Metal albums ever, most notably "Come My Fanatics" and "Dopethrone" there is always going to be pressure placed on them to match those recordings. This can be very unfair of course but Electric Wizard have always done a damn good job over the years at remaining consistent. The last full length, "Witchcult Today" released in late 2007 show the band still had what it takes and despite some reviewers claiming it was a patchy effort it still climbed to the top record list of many people in 2007 and its pretty obvious this album will do the same."  ~ Doommantia review by Ed.

"I think it’s cool when a good but slightly aging band can overcome its weaker records and put something really good on the table once more. It's especially cool when a band in that situation is able to release one of its finest records ever. Such is the deal with Black Label Society, whose 8th studio offering Order Of The Black consists of some of the best material the band has put on a record in a long time." ~ Sputnikmusic review.
